Triple jumper cleared of drug offence
Australian triple jumper Andrew Murphy, who tried to import a herbal supplement containing ephedrine six years ago, has been given the all-clear to compete at the Athens Olympics.
Athletics officials determined Murphy did not commit a doping offence.
While officials could not name him because of privacy provisions, Australian head coach Keith Connor said Murphy was the athlete involved.
"I haven't spoken to Andrew today, I haven't got any feedback from him yet, so I'm not sure how much of a distraction it's been for him," Connor said from the Australian team camp in Varese in Italy.
Connor, who used to by Murphy's personal coach before taking on the national job said it was a very fickle situation for the athlete.
"We've seen with the cyclists it was such a huge distraction for them in the sense of misinformation," he said.
"From the reports I've seen he has no case to answer."
The decision to clear Murphy means all but one of the drug cases hanging over the Australian Olympic team is now cleared up.
Of the 481 athletes going to Athens, only sprint cyclist Jobie Dajka remains under question because of drugs.
Dajka, 22, is awaiting the outcome of an investigation by South Australian police and former Supreme Court judge Robert Anderson, but expects to be cleared.
