Door ajar for Burke to start for NSW
Former NSW rugby captain Matthew Burke will discover by Thursday whether he has finally regained a starting spot with in form fullback Matt Rogers battling to be fit for Saturday's clash with the Stormers in Cape Town.
Rogers, whose haul of 78 points from the first three rounds is bigger than seven of the 12 teams, sprained an ankle in the dying moments of last Friday's win over the Cats.
Team officials rated the Wallabies back a "fifty-fifty" chance of being fit for Saturday and were adopting a "wait and see" approach with the team to be announced on Thursday.
Rogers, who scored over 20 points in each of the ladder-leading Waratahs' three victories was hopeful of being fit for the match at Newlands.
Should he fail to recover in time, it would leave the door ajar for 30-year-old Burke to make his first start of the tournament.
A shoulder injury and limited pre-season playing time meant Burke didn't make his tournament debut this season until round three when he came off the bench against the Cats.
He lined up at five-eighth, the position he has set his sights on this season, but has extensive experience of playing fullback, despite occupying the outside centre position for the last two years.
Australia's most capped fullback, Burke would also be a logical replacement as goalkicker for Rogers, who was in superb kicking form prior to his injury.
Prop Matt Dunning, who missed the Cats match with a shoulder problem, was expected to be available for this week's game.
Another Wallabies stalwart pleased to return to a starting lineup is Brumbies lock David Giffin.
