Hockeyroos win bronze in Athens
The Hockeyroos will head into a four-Test series against South Africa on a high after winning the bronze medal play-off at the Athens International Hockey Tournament.
Goals from Louise Dobson and Katrina Powell ensured Australia rebounded from their loss to the South Africans with a resounding 2-0 victory over Great Britain.
"Today was an encouraging performance and we're slowly getting to the level of play that we expect," coach David Bell said.
"Yesterday (a 4-3 loss to South Africa after leading inside the final 10 minutes) was our worst effort of the tournament but today we stepped it up a level which was pleasing.
"We started to get our teamwork back together in stages today and that is one of the main things that's been lacking in our three previous matches."
Once again the Hockeyroos created enough opportunities to easily win the match but struggled to put away their opponents.
The scoring was eventually handled by the two most experienced members of the squad, with Dobson and Powell scoring either side of halftime.
Dobson's penalty corner strike in the final minute of the first half gave the Hockeyroos a deserved 1-0 lead at the break.
Powell finished a bright attacking movement down the right to double the lead in the 59th minute.
"Despite finishing third and not getting the score lines that we would have liked, we're happy with the way the trip to Athens went considering the stage of our preparation for the Olympics," Bell said.
