Okon to skipper Socceroos
Paul Okon will captain Australia in next Wednesday's soccer international against England after enduring months of speculation that he would be dumped as skipper.
Socceroos coach Frank Farina today announced that Okon would lead the side at Upton Park.
But Farina said he would then reconsider the captaincy issue.
"For this game Paul Okon will still captain Australia, we'll see what happens after that," he said.
The Leeds midfielder has come back well after struggling in the last year and half to cement a permanent place with an English club and Farina said last year his lack of first team football could even cost him a place in the team.
He left Middlesbrough after not getting a game last season and then languished in first division with Watford.
After initially finding it tough to break into Leeds' side after arriving at Elland Road this season, Okon has become one of the troubled club's few consistent performers.
There had been speculation that Okon's Leeds teammate Harry Kewell had said he wanted the captaincy and even goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer was suggested as a possible skipper, but Farina opted to maintain the status quo.
Farina also said his match plans would not alter much from the last time he had a full squad together - 14 months ago in the World Cup qualifying loss to Uruguay.
"We're not going to change too much, we don't enough time with the players but the squad that we've got has been together a while, there's few new faces, but we'll be going along with the same plan we have in the past," Farina said.
