A star-studded World XI batting lineup failed to match the power of cricket's cleanest hitter as Australia again dominated the second Super Series one-dayer.

Adam Gilchrist helped secure Australia an unassailable 2-0 lead in the best-of-three series with a breathtaking 103 off just 79 balls in the 55-run win at Telstra Dome.

The Australian left-hander broke the record, which he had shared, for the fastest Australian one-day international century as the home side amassed 4-328 from 50 overs.

After suffering some early punishment, the Australians then broke the back of the World XI innings to dismiss the visitors for 273 in 45.3 overs.

Compounding the loss, World batsman Kevin Pietersen will almost certainly miss the final one-dayer on Sunday after hurting his right hamstring while fielding in the final over of the Australian innings.

The Englishman batted with a runner, while Australian opener Simon Katich did not field because of a groin injury.

Friday night's success followed the Australians' 93-run win in the series opener on Wednesday night and was a further boost to the confidence of the home side after its Ashes series loss.

Gilchrist reached his ton in just 73 balls, breaking the Australian mark of 78 he had shared with former Australian captain Allan Border.

He was out six balls later for 103, an innings that featured eight fours and four sixes.

It was a near-faultless knock, apart from his near-runout on 98, and followed his match-one score of 45.
