Tigers hang on to win thriller
The Melbourne Tigers have stunned NBL champs the Sydney Kings for the second time in a week, winning a four-point thriller at the State Netball Centre.
After an overtime victory over the Kings in Sydney last weekend, the Tigers rode out a spirited fourth quarter Sydney fightback to win 93-89.
Centre Mark Bradtke was outstanding with 28 points and 12 rebounds, while import Dave Thomas had 18 points and 12 rebounds.
The Tigers won the game with a 21-2 run from midway through the third quarter into the start of the fourth which gave them a 16-point lead.
But the Kings, sparked by guard C J Bruton, then unleashed their own 19-3 run to tie up the game at 84-84 with six minutes remaining.
Bruton scored 11 points in the quarter, including a clutch three-pointer to put his side just two points behind with 40 seconds left as the Tigers looked set to fold.
Then a Thomas tip-in, followed by a Darryl McDonald intercept, sealed victory for the Tigers.
For the Kings, import Ebi Ere was best with 20 points, while forward Matthew Nielsen had 21 points and 13 rebounds.
New US forward Chris Carrawell also made an impressive debut with 15 points and 10 rebounds, showing enough in his 34 minutes on court to suggest he will be a quality import for the Kings.
Sydney coach Brian Goorjian paid tribute to the Tigers' bench men, who provided 19 points - most at pivotal times.
