Victorian teen within sight of Open spot
Victorian teenager Olivia Rogowska is one win away from earning a spot in the Australian Open tennis tournament, capping a stunning week by reaching the women's wildcard playoff final at Melbourne Park.
Rogowska, 16, beat experienced Sophie Ferguson 6-3 7-5 in their semi-final, with victory in Friday's final guaranteeing her a wildcard spot in the main draw for next month's Open.
It follows Rogowska's win over former world No.4 Jelena Dokic on Wednesday - the youngster leading Dokic 6-3 3-1 before her older rival retired with a thigh strain.
Rogowska, a member of Australia's junior Fed Cup team, will play fellow Victorian Christina Wheeler in the final.
Wheeler, ranked just outside the world's top 200, beat Jess Moore 6-4 1-6 6-4 in their semi-final.
"I'm really enjoying this tournament, another big match tomorrow," Rogowska said.
"I don't think many people expected me to go all the way but from the beginning I always had faith."
In the men's wildcard final, Victorian 32-year-old Joseph Sirianni will play Gosford's Adam Feeney after both won their semis.
Sirianni ousted last year's Open boys' singles winner Brydan Klein 6-4 6-3, while Feeney beat Sam Groth 3-6 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-5).
