Ronchi evokes Hookes with 51-ball ton

Western Australia's Luke Ronchi wasn't out of nappies when David Hookes blasted his famous 34-ball ton at Adelaide in 1982.

Today, the 26 year-old blasted a century which took just eight minutes longer than Hookes', earning himself a permanent spot in cricketing annals and putting WA firmly on their way towards an outright Pura Cup win against Queensland.

In an exhibition of hitting not seen in Australian first class cricket since Hookes' effort 25 years ago, Ronchi took 51 minutes and 51 balls to reach three figures, with six fours and 11 sixes flying off his blade.

Reaching 50 in 40 balls, it took just 11 more balls for Ronchi to reach the ton, with a scoring sequence that read 6, 6, 4, 6, 0, 1, 6, 6, 6, 4, 6.

And after unsurprisingly rating it as the best innings he had ever played, Ronchi also said he had never seen Hookes' blistering knock and was a little embarrassed to now be mentioned in the same breath.

"I was one year-old (when Hookes scored the century), and it is unbelievable (to be compared to him)," Ronchi said.

"He is an amazing player and if I could do half what he has done in first class cricket and international cricket I would be extra happy.

"It helped when half an hour before tea the message came out to try and up the run rate. It was good fun, everything I tried to hit came off."

Most of what Ronchi hit came off extremely quickly, as it did from teammates Luke Pomersbach and Shaun Marsh who demolished a woeful Queensland attack to put WA in command.

Pomersbach's 176 and Marsh's 165 not out steered WA to 5-565 declared, a lead of 337 which by stumps looked more than enough.

In reply, Queensland's batsmen capitulated as badly as their bowlers did, slumping to 4-77 at the close, still needing 260 to make WA bat again.

Queensland's plight was already bleak before Ronchi's pyrotechnics, with Pomersbach himself hitting eight sixes - six of them belted after he reached three figures.

And while Marsh's unbeaten 165 off 321 balls was pedestrian in comparison, it was his highest first class score and the bedrock around which Pomersbach and Ronchi went bananas.

The day had started badly for the Bulls, with Clinton Perren dropping Pomersbach in Ashley Noffke's first over the day.

And it went downhill from there, with Marsh bringing up his century before lunch and Pomersbach the first ball after.

That was the cue for 23 year-old to go berserk, moving from 100 to 150 in 23 balls, smashing six huge sixes on the way.

Only a spectacular piece of fielding by Ryan Broad on the boundary sent Pomersbach packing.

But that was just the cue for Ronchi to enter and eventually outshine Adam Gilchrist's 57-ball ton during the Ashes Test at the WACA last December.

"I felt sorry for the bowlers actually," Pomersbach said afterwards.

Ronchi however, said he did not.
