Hookes fighting for life after assault
Former Australian Test cricketer David Hookes is in a critical condition in a Melbourne hospital after being assaulted on Sunday night.
Police said the assault took place in the street not far from a hotel in St Kilda.
Police would not confirm the victim's identity, but Radio 2UE in Sydney said Hookes was fighting for his life in the Alfred Hospital after the incident.
Police said they were questioning a 22-year-old St Albans man over the assault.
Hookes is the coach of the Victorian state team.
