Ablett wins another award for Geelong
Gary Ablett has earned another award for Geelong in their stellar season, being named the AFL Players' Association Most Valuable Player in 2007.
Ablett, one of the keys for the Cats in the grand final against Port Adelaide, was awarded the Leigh Matthews Trophy at the AFLPA's awards night.
The Geelong midfielder was awarded 212 votes by his fellow players and comfortably beat Brisbane Lions forward Jonathan Brown, who polled 139.
West Coast's Daniel Kerr (48) finished third in the count, while Fremantle captain Matthew Pavlich and Port's Chad Cornes were equal fourth on 32.
Ablett's father Gary Ablett Senior won the award in 1993.
Ablett's victory continued Geelong's outstanding run in major accolades this season.
His teammate and fellow midfielder Jimmy Bartel won the Brownlow Medal this week, Joel Selwood won the Rising Star award and Bartel and Ablett were among nine players honoured with All-Australian status.
Brown was successful in some other prestigious awards, as he won the Robert Rose Most Courageous Player Award and was also named best captain.
Brown won 151 votes in the most courageous category to beat six-time former winner Glenn Archer (109) of the Kangaroos and Bartel (100).
Brown proved the most popular leader with players, as he won ahead of Sydney's Brett Kirk and Chris Judd, who skippered West Coast this season before departing.
In other awards, Joel Selwood won for best first year player, Hawthorn's Lance Franklin won the Marn Grook Award for best emerging indigenous player, while Collingwood's Shane Wakelin and Adelaide's Brett Burton were the joint winners of the education and training excellence award, in relation to off-field achievements.
