Ablett could switch clubs, warns Harley
Former Geelong captain Tom Harley warns that Gary Ablett could be remembered more as a Gold Coast player if he joins the AFL expansion club.
Harley is concerned that the postponement of contract talks until the end of the season means it is more likely the Brownlow Medallist and two-time premiership player will switch clubs.
Ablett's manager Liam Pickering confirmed on Monday night that the negotiations with Geelong are now on hold.
"I'm probably with the common school of thought that the longer it drags on, the more likely it is he's going to go," Harley told radio station SEN.
"It would be a shame for Gary not to be remembered as a Geelong player.
"If he goes and plays six years for the Gold Coast, I think he'll probably be remembered for his deeds at the Gold Coast (more) than Geelong.
"That would be my advice, my two bobs worth."
Ablett, the game's best current player, is the Gold Coast team's No.1 recruiting target.
The Cats hierarchy have become increasingly frustrated at the intense speculation about Ablett's future.
Harley was a much-respected captain who retired at the end of last season, after leading the Cats to the 2007 and `09 premierships.
