NZ Warriors and Roosters draw 31-all
The Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors have fought out a gripping 31-all NRL draw after extra-time at the Sydney Football Stadium.
It was the first deadlock since 2005 and only the fourth since the introduction of golden-point extra-time in 2003.
In easily the most entertaining football game of the season, both sides nailed late field goals in the dying moments of regular time but could not land an attempt in the 10 minutes of golden-point to secure a victory.
Warriors fullback Wade McKinnon missed a 27m attempt with just over a minute left in extra time while Roosters five-eighth Braith Anasta also narrowly missed his 45m effort with just over 20 seconds on the clock.
In a pulsating match in front of 15,124 fans, the lead changed several times and the split result was only fair.
Braith Anasta nailed a 40m field goal with three minutes remaining in regular time which looked to hand the Roosters an amazing 31-30 victory.
But in yet another twist on a dramatic afternoon, Warriors five-eighth Michael Witt landed his own 38m field goal with just 20 seconds until the fulltime hooter to level scores and send the game into extra time.
The Roosters had earlier trailed 30-18 with 12 minutes remaining when referee Shayne Hayne controversially sin binned Warriors centre Simon Mannering for a late strip on Sam Perrett.
Craig Wing went over untouched from dummy half in the 69th minute and then centre Joel Monaghan scored his third try of the day in the 76th minute to level scores at 30-all.
The Warriors were headed towards their fourth successive victory in regular time after Manu Vatuvei dived on a Grant Rovelli grubber on the hour to extend the Warriors advantage to 12 points.
Warriors standout Epalahame Lauaki broke the 18-all deadlock in the 53rd minute with his second try of the day, although the final pass from Rovelli appeared forward.
The Roosters started superbly and looked headed towards a fourth straight win under Fittler when they scored three tries in 12 minutes to hold a 16-0 lead midway through the first half.
But the Warriors flexed their premiership muscle, running in three of their own tries in an eight-minute stretch to take a 18-16 lead into the sheds at half-time.
The draw means Roosters caretaker coach Brad Fittler remains undefeated in his four games in charge of an NRL team.
Ashley Harrison may also be in hot water from the match review committee when his 52nd minute fight with Michael Witt appeared to be instigated by a headbutt from the Roosters lock.
Warriors lock Micheal Luck was put on report for a 12th minute dangerous throw on John Williams and team-mate Rovelli put on report for a high tackle on Perrett in the 19th minute.
