AFL launch another bet investigation

The AFL is now investigating two potential breaches of its strict betting regulations, following a successful plunge on Gold Coast defender Nathan Bock.

Bock started in the forward line on Saturday for the first time this season and there was a massive pre-game run on him to kick the opening goal.

His odds shortened from $101 to $21 and punters were rewarded when the Suns defender kicked the first goal in the match against Hawthorn.

It was only his second goal of the year.

The AFL has confirmed its integrity officer Brett Clothier is now looking into the plunge, amid concerns that there was a leak about Bock's move into attack.

"It's an investigation, I can't comment," Suns coach Guy McKenna said on Monday.

"It's an AFL investigation and it's ongoing. I'm sure the club will in time make a comment around that."

Late last week, Clothier also interviewed Essendon assistant coach Dean Wallis over an allegation that the former premiership defender bet on an AFL game.

It is unclear when Clothier will complete the two investigations.

"I'd hope for Dean's sake it gets wrapped up as quickly as possible and in the right fashion and everyone's okay out of it," Essendon coach James Hird said.

Hird added the investigation would not be a distraction ahead of Sunday's blockbuster elimination final against fierce rivals Carlton.

"Not at all - Dean has our full support, he's a very valued member of our football club, there's still an investigation going," he said.

"Once the investigation is finished, we'll deal with it then.

"But the players, coaching staff and club are fully-focussed on the Carlton game on Sunday."

Collingwood premiership defender Heath Shaw has just ended an eight-game suspension after he was caught betting on captain Nick Maxwell to kick the first goal in a match.

Shaw was also fined $20,000, while Maxwell was also fined for letting family members know about his rare move forward.
