North director fined for betting on game
A year after ruckman Dave Hale was among four AFL players sanctioned for betting offences, North Melbourne has again fallen foul of anti-gambling provisions.
Board member Ron Joseph said he was unaware that the league's strict gambling rules also applied to club directors.
His two losing bets on North for last year's qualifying final, which totalled $300, have resulted in a $50,000 suspended fine.
The penalty will apply if anyone associated with the club breaches the code again.
North directors and staff must also attend an AFL education session on the anti-gambling provisions.
"At the time of placing the bets Ron had not been fully informed of the AFL gambling policy," Kangaroos chief executive Eugene Arocca said in a statement.
"We have since put measures in place to ensure that all club directors, officials, and players are acutely aware of their obligations under the rule."
Hale received a $5000 suspended fine and received counselling last year for breaching the anti-gambling rules.
Joseph's name came up after the AFL checked the gambling records of agencies in partnership with the league.
"I accept that by placing the bets I broke the AFL gambling regulations and understand the position that puts the club in," Joseph said.
"I regret any embarrassment or distraction I may have caused."
