NRL won't speculate on punting penalty
The NRL has refused to speculate on how severe the penalty would be for a player implicated in a betting scandal and have made it clear they're not investigating any of their athletes at this stage.
Canterbury prop Ryan Tandy has been embroiled in a betting controversy after the TAB announced that 95 per cent of bets placed on the Bulldogs and North Queensland match two Saturday's ago were for the unusual option of a penalty goal being the first scoring play.
Tandy is alleged to have placed bets on a Cowboys penalty goal to be the first scoring play and has been accused of purposefully knocking on and giving away a penalty in opening moments of the match.
The Bulldogs player has strongly denied the accusations.
NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said information was being sought from a variety of areas but wouldn't speculate on possible outcomes.
"We're not really saying what process we're going through but we're gathering information," Annesley said.
"We've still got some information we're waiting on before we decide next steps and at this stage we don't have that so there won't be anything else breaking on it today.
"Because it's an investigation we don't want to go into detail, but we're receiving information from a number of different sources.
"I'm not going to speculate on (potential punishments) because the moment I start talking about that it looks like we're investigating players and at this stage we're not making any allegations against anybody.
"It could take a few days before we get anywhere ... Cleary we'd like to tidy it up as quickly as possible, we don't want it hanging around for an extended period of time."
