Essendon confirm coach investigated
Essendon has confirmed the AFL is investigating assistant coach Dean Wallis for allegedly betting on the game.
The Bombers have released a statement confirming Wallis met the AFL and club officials on Friday morning.
"The club will continue to support Dean throughout the period of the investigation," the statement said.
"The club will make no further comment at this time."
Wallis - a Bombers dual premiership player - is a development coach at the club.
It comes at the end of a season in which Collingwood defender Heath Shaw was suspended for eight weeks for betting, and skipper Nick Maxwell was fined for breaking the league's strict anti-gambling rules.
AFL chief Demetriou told 3AW it "defies belief" if the allegation was true, considering the recent penalties and publicity surrounding those involved in the game who gambled on AFL matches.
"Our integrity officer Brett Clothier is continuing that investigation today and, once he gets more facts and completes that investigation, we'll do what we always do and make that known publicly, if in fact that is true," Demetriou said.
"He has to actually speak to the person which he intends to do in the next day or so. He's got to conduct some more inquiries.
"If there is something to answer for, we will make it public."
It is understood the alleged bet involves a three-figure sum on a quarter quad bet - where a punter nominates the team leading at the end of each quarter, and the margin.
Demetriou said he was unsure of what sort of sanction would be handed down if the person being investigated was found guilty.
"Not wishing to pre-judge what may or may not occur, but if in fact someone has bet on their team again, after what has happened in the past few weeks, then you can only assume that this is a very serious issue," he said.
