Match review panel faces tough decisions
AFL's most contentious judicial issues - the high bump and sling tackle - are back on the agenda as the match review panel prepares to make finals-shaping decisions for two players.
West Coast defender Beau Waters faces scrutiny for a bump which concussed and bloodied Essendon's Jobe Watson during the Eagles' win in Perth on Saturday.
He was reported for rough conduct after the incident, which sparked angry scenes of remonstration from Bombers players afterwards.
And Essendon's Heath Hocking will face a nervous Monday awaiting a ruling on his sling tackle on Eagle Daniel Kerr - a charge the match review panel have tended to base their penalty on how badly the affected player is hurt.
Kerr continued on to produce a best-on-ground effort, until another late knock saw him benched with a rib injury.
With both teams seemingly finals bound, the panel's decisions on Monday could have a marked effect on finals.
Waters, who has just returned to the team after a season marred by an elbow injury, would be a huge loss to his side ahead of their likely finals double chance.
Television replays showed the incident happened so quickly that Waters may argue he could do little to stop the impact.
For midfield workhorse Hocking, anything more than a one-match ban could be catastrophic for Essendon's finals hopes.
The Bombers have just one more home-and-away match, with a bye before what would be their first final.
The match-day report of Fremantle's Clayton Hinkley for rough conduct against North Melbourne debutant Aaron Mullett in the Dockers' heavy loss on Saturday night will also be reviewed.
