Waters, Hurn battling for fitness

West Coast coach John Worsfold remains hopeful Beau Waters and Shannon Hurn will be fit to face fellow strugglers Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

Hurn has missed the past two matches with a calf injury, while Waters sat out the final quarter of Saturday's loss to Adelaide due to a badly corked hamstring.

Waters had a light kick-around at training on Wednesday but Worsfold said the true test would come later in the week.

"The first three or four days after corks are generally just not letting it re-bleed so we take it pretty easy," Worsfold said.

"I'm not even sure what he's planning to do this morning, it would be more rehab I would think, but still a good chance of playing.

"It's just a cork so it's really going to be about functionality.

"If it feels like he can play then I know he'll be putting his hand up to play."

Hurn has become a critical part of West Coast's backline and Worsfold said the 22-year-old remained on track to return against the Bombers.

"The plan's always been to get him up for this week," Worsfold said.

"So he's got to tick a few boxes and prove his fitness first but we'll see how he goes.

"He hasn't done full training sessions yet so he's got to be able to get through that and say 'I'm fit to play' and the medicos to say 'he's done enough' for us to say he's fit to play.

"That happens over the next 24 hours, today's session and a bit tomorrow.

"He's now become one of our senior players in the backline.

"With Darren Glass and Sam Butler out, Shannon's the other senior player down there so it's good to have him there."

Koby Stevens, Tom Swift, Pat McGinnity, Ben McKinley and Tim Houlihan are others in line for a recall, while Essendon will be boosted by the return of defender Dustin Fletcher.
