Lockyer says Broncos building to NRL title
History-making skipper Darren Lockyer believes Brisbane are building towards another NRL premiership.
Lockyer, who'll join former Bulldogs great Terry Lamb and Manly legend Steve Menzies on 349 NRL games when plays against the Warriors on Saturday, says if the Broncos don't win it this year, they are well placed to win a premiership within the next few years.
Brisbane have a chance to finish as high as second going into the finals and Lockyer said on Monday the team was in their best form and best position since the 2006 NRL finals when they upset Melbourne in the grand final.
Lockyer, who arrived at the Broncos from Roma in 1995 and played against Lamb that season, is set to officially break the all-time games record the following weekend against the Cowboys in Townsville - a venue which has not been kind to him with injuries in recent years.
"There's been a few milestones over the last 18 months and I knew this was one of the records coming up when I started the season," said Lockyer, keen to escape hype surrounding the occasion.
"To get here is very satisfying and I've been relatively injury free since the start of the year.
"I'm here now and I get to share it with the Broncos fans this weekend against the Warriors which is important to me.
"I break the record against the Cowboys next weekend but this is an opportunity for Broncos fans to share this milestone with me."
The veteran skipper said he wasn't thinking about his impending retirement at the season's end just yet, or a fairytale grand final finish, but admitted he was happy with the way the team was rolling into the finals.
"The club's building towards another premiership," he said.
"You just look at the roster they've got and the kids that are coming along.
"The Storm beat us by 20 points but they're the benchmark and we're not that far off.
"Our performance last week (against Cronulla) was stepping it up.
"We're in a good position this yearand for the next few years."
