Players would be excited by Bennett news
Brisbane players may have been gagged from commenting on Wayne Bennett's reported return home, but the club's former representative hooker Kerrod Walters believes they'd be excited about the possibility of being coached by the best in the business.
Players were told prior to training on Thursday morning not to talk about Bennett and later chief executive Paul White offered a "no comment" when asked to confirm News Limited reports the master coach was on his way home in 2012.
"If the players said `no' they'd be kidding themselves," said Walters, who in 18 months under Bennett went from Ipswich Jets hooker to wearing the No.9 for Brisbane, Queensland and Australia.
Walters, a foundation Bronco who played all his 206 NRL games under Bennett, said it was difficult to put a value on being coached by the master mentor.
"He went to St George Illawarra and transformed some of them blokes into a premiership force," he said.
"That's what he does, he makes you a better player."
Walters had no doubts Bennett could return to Brisbane and add more premierships to the six he won in 21 years with the club before delivering a premiership to the Dragons.
"I never pictured him coming back, I thought he'd had his time here and was looking for new challenges," he said.
"But I guess he might consider it a new challenge coming back to a new group of players coming through ... (Darren) Lockyer's retiring so it would be a fresh start for him."
Brisbane and Newcastle are the two clubs bidding for Bennett's signature but Walters feels he could still go to Souths.
"Wayne is big on the history of the game which is why he went to St George," said Walters.
"Souths are rugby league's most successful club, they're a foundation club and they're crying out for another premiership.
"There would also be the challenge of a third premiership with another club.
"The only thing you know for certain is Wayne will let us all know when he is good and ready."
