Weyman facing fight for Test spot
St George Illawarra prop Michael Weyman faces battles on several fronts to regain a Test jumper - even from within his own NRL side.
Just two games back from a groin injury, Weyman is making a late bid for a spot in the Australian side to play New Zealand next week - the same game in which he made his one and only Test appearance last year.
With Queensland pair Matt Scott and Petero Civoniceva seen as near-certain selections, Weyman knows a big game against likely Kiwi prop Fuifui Moimoi on Sunday could tip the selection odds in his favour.
The likes of Canberra duo Tom Learoyd-Lahrs and David Shillington plus Brisbane workhorse Ben Hannant are seen as his main challengers, but there is also speculation young Dragons prop Trent Merrin could complete a meteoric rise to nab a green and gold jumper after a strong start to the season.
"Mez has been going great all year and so has Dan Hunt ... it's one of those things, we just keep chugging away in the forwards there and everyone does their bit," Weyman said.
"I'd love to be a part of it but all I can do is worry about playing football."
After a strong return against South Sydney in round six, Weyman's timing was a bit off in the Anzac Day win over Sydney Roosters, with two of his runs called back for forward passes.
Weyman said he was looking forward to taking on Moimoi, who had his best game of the year against Gold Coast last weekend with 151 metres and 26 tackles.
"He's a handful to tackle and it's just one of those challenges that you face and one that you look forward to," Weyman said.
"It's going to be a tough battle for us."
