History repeating for Dragons: Wynn
St George premiership-winner Graeme Wynn has likened the current Dragons pack to the one which helped the red and whites to their last grand final triumph in 1979.
In that decider 31 years ago, Wynn was the young buck in a Dragons pack led by Craig Young and Rod Reddy which claimed St George's 15th and final premiership before the St George Illawarra merger was formed in 1999.
Wynn said he sees similarities between his grand final success and the crop which will carry the club's hopes into Sunday's ANZ Stadium clash against the Sydney Roosters. He has named Michael Weyman as the man to assume `79 skipper Craig Young's role as the undisputed forward leader for the team.
"Back in `79 we had good forwards, they've got good forwards and it's always led by Weyman," Wynn said at the Dragons open training session on Thursday.
"He's the star of the pack ... he takes it forward and Benny Creagh and Jeremy Smith, they build on what Weyman does."
Weyman, like Young before him, has played Test football for Australia and his team relies heavily on his experience and power to get the ball up field.
There was a slight sense of panic when Weyman sat out of training on Tuesday with an ongoing groin injury, but the hulking forward hit the park on Thursday and completed the whole session to the cheers of a buoyant Dragons crowd.
Wynn has no doubt Weyman will be fit for Sunday's grand final.
"With his adrenaline pumping and on Sunday with 80-odd thousand people out there cheering for him, I don't think he'll feel any pain," Wynn said.
"The only pain he might feel is ... if they lose, that's the only pain he'll feel."
Wynn credited coach Wayne Bennett and the balance of the side as the reasons for the Dragons dominance this season.
"They've got so much strike power right across the park but I think it all starts with your dummy-half work at hooker, and Nathan Fien is a brilliant player," he said.
"I think he brings something extra to our team and also Gaz (Mark Gasnier) is getting better with each game and of course the fullback of the year, Darius Boyd."
Wynn said he has come to appreciate winning in `79 more and more as the years have gone by.
"You really understand how hard it is to actually win a grand final and looking back on what we achieved you sit back with pride," Wynn said, adding that it `feels just like yesterday'.
