McCabe stock rising despite Brumbies' woe
The stock of Brumbies fullback Pat McCabe continues to rise with another strong performance on Saturday to give Wallabies coach Robbie Deans another option in a World Cup year.
McCabe, who made his Australia debut against Italy last November, has carried his 2010 form into the first three rounds of the Super Rugby season despite his side's unimpressive start.
Winner of the best and fairest award for the Brumbies in his debut season in 2010, McCabe's powerful and straight runs have tested opponent's defences while he has defused high balls with ease.
And he was at it again in the Brumbies' 31-25 loss to Queensland at Canberra Stadium.
The 22-year-old displayed fortitude in playing through an injured right shoulder after he stretched out to score the Canberra-based side's first try in the 31st minute.
He received a high tackle from Reds prop Ben Daley late in the first half and made a try-saving tackle with his hurt shoulder.
Deans, a former fullback for New Zealand, would be impressed with the performance of several of Australia's potential fullbacks so far this season.
Wallabies fullback Kurtley Beale has impressed for the Waratahs, Mark Gerrard was a significant factor in the Rebels' win against the Brumbies the previous weekend and McCabe has been his side's best player so far.
McCabe also offers versatility as a utility bench player for Deans as he can cover wing and outside centre.
