Western Force lose Cross, gain Fairbanks
The Western Force have signed former Brumbies and Queensland centre Gene Fairbanks hot on the heels of losing Ryan Cross to the NSW Waratahs.
The Force on Thursday announced Fairbanks had agreed to a two-year Super 15 deal which sees him return home after a short stint with Japanese club Honda.
The 2006 Wallabies tourist, 27, debuted for the Reds in 2003 before switching to the Brumbies where he made his name as a nimble and reliable No.12 in 38 Super games.
"I wanted to spend a bit of time overseas travelling and to experience another culture and rugby," Fairbanks said in a statement.
"But my plan all along was to return to Super rugby and to get that opportunity with the Force is something I'm really happy about.
"I think the team is heading in a good direction. Injuries took their toll this season however there is a good culture at the club and I think there is plenty of upside to come."
Rugby WA boss Vern Reid said Fairbanks' experience, versatility and character made him a valuable acquisition.
Cross had played much of the 2010 season at inside centre where Fairbanks has played the bulk of his rugby.
After missing out on the initial Wallabies' 40-man squad, Cross has confirmed he will play with the Waratahs next season in a bid to rise to the challenge of making the 2011 World Cup.
The eight-Test former Sydney Roosters' rugby league centre signed a one-year contract with the Waratahs.
The Force are also in a major fight to keep classy wing-fullback Cameron Shepherd from the clutches of the Melbourne Rebels.
Despite missing out on the Wallabies squad, Cross was offered a new contract for 2011 by the Australian Rugby Union to give him hope of adding to his 18 Test caps.
"I was pretty happy with the back end of my season this year and the body's feeling pretty good, so I think I've still got it in me to play at that level," Cross said.
"I'm disappointed not to be a part of the squad at the moment, but hopefully I can play some good rugby and get another chance at the end of this year.
"If not, then hopefully I can have a good, strong season for the Waratahs (in 2011) and put myself in a position to be a part of the World Cup."
Cross will not only have competition from his own new Waratahs teammate Rob Horne, the incumbent Test No.13, but also Queensland centres Anthony Faingaa and Will Chambers who were selected ahead of him to play for the Australians Barbarians.
