Injured Storm trio remain 'touch and go'
Star Melbourne fullback Billy Slater trained well on Tuesday, but three injured Storm team-mates remain "touch and go" for their NRL season-opener against Manly.
Centres Chase Stanley and Beau Champion and forward Sika Manu sat out the session ahead of the March 12 home match against the Sea Eagles.
Coach Craig Bellamy will not take any risks with injuries, particularly given the regular season is yet to even start.
"I don't think there is anything there too serious, we are not talking three or four weeks, but they are all going to be touch and go for that first game," Bellamy said of Champion, Stanley and Manu.
"Next week I want to train with the squad we are going to take in to that game - it's more likely a couple are going to be out but hopefully some recover quicker than the medical staff think.
"This time of year we are not going to take any chances.
"It is a long season and Billy is training really well at the moment which is a positive, he hasn't done too much contact work yet and we'll look at that next week."
Slater looks to be recovering well from his shoulder injury, while Manu and Stanley have knee problems and Champion is nursing a calf strain.
Champion joined Melbourne from South Sydney in the off-season in a deal that allowed the Rabbitohs to fit former Storm superstar Greg Inglis under their salary cap.
"We were looking forward to Beau playing last week," Bellamy said.
"He hasn't played much footy at all this year so that makes it pretty hard for him to play in that first game.
"He's only played 20 minutes this year - Chase is the best chance to be playing."
Asked if back-ups would be ready if the injured players were unavailable, Bellamy replied "we'll see".
The Storm will have a longer session on Friday and then taper off their training next week ahead of the Manly game.
"We have been a bit mixed in the trials, we went well against Canberra then against the Broncos we weren'tso good," said Bellamy.
"We've got a bit over a week to keep working on those combinations, but now we're working on a couple of new ones.
"That happens in footy and we'll get on with it and do the best we can."
Bellamy said the competition was tight for places in the forward pack, with a reserve grade trial on Thursday night giving Melbourne another chance to look at candidates.
Brisbane beat Melbourne 26-6 in their last trial match and Bellamy was disappointed the Broncos scored too many close-range tries.
