Eagles set for revival
West Coast have picked a youthful but formidable looking lineup for their NAB Cup clashes with Hawthorn and Fremantle at Paterson's Stadium in Subiaco on Sunday.
The Eagles do battle with Hawthorn in the opening match before the Hawks meet Fremantle, then West Coast finish off against the Dockers in the western derby.
Highly-touted Eagles draft picks Jack Darling, Andrew Gaff and Scott Lycett will all play in the NAB Cup opener.
Only Daniel Kerr, Mark LeCras, Beau Waters and Adam Selwood are missing and new West Coast assistant coach David Teague revealed that all the young players will receive plenty of game time.
"Seeing as we're playing in the first and last game, we're going to try and give everyone that is available an opportunity to play," Teague said.
"I'd say that 80 per cent of our young players will play on Sunday.
"We will have some playing both games, we'll control which players do that, and it won't be the older guys it will be more the young players."
Hawthorn has picked relatively unknown squad with the only recognised players taking part being Shaun Burgoyne, Cyril Rioli, Tom Murphy, Brent Renouf and Ryan Schoenmakers.
Those missing including captain Luke Hodge, Lance Franklin, Sam Mitchell, Jordan Lewis, Brad Sewell, Jarryd Roughead, Chance Bateman, Brent Guerra and Xavier Ellis.
Coach Alastair Clarkson, however, is looking forward to seeing how several of his less recognised players go including injury-plagued ruckman Max Bailey who is coming off three knee reconstructions.
"Max got through (intra-club match in Launceston) and that's really pleasing for him. He's had a big pre-season - that's what's been great for him," Clarkson said.
"The times that he's hurt his knee he's missed a lot of the pre-season because of the timing of the injury, but coming back from this one he's been able to at least do a full pre-season."
Fremantle had an outstanding 2010 campaign winning a home final against Hawthorn before losing the semi-final to Geelong at the MCG.
Experienced all-rounder Luke McPharlin is glad the action is starting up but knows the focus is on young players and new arrivals Jack Anthony, Jon Griffin, Peter Faulks and Josh Mellington.
"I certainly enjoy playing football so any game that I'm thrown in I'll enjoy," McPharlin said.
"Sunday night is going to be a fantastic atmosphere, but us senior players have our eye on round one."
"In season's past the senior players have played half or three quarters and it's a good opportunity for young players to have a run."
