Dockers beat Eagles in London AFL clash
It may not have had the importance of the last Australian fixture at The Oval, but Fremantle was happy to win West Australian football's version of The Ashes with a 17-point win over arch rival West Coast.
In front of a well-lubricated crowd on Saturday night, a young Fremantle side - including eight players without a senior game - controlled the middle part of the match to beat the more experienced Eagles featuring 13 of their AFL grand final 22.
The Dockers won 13.12 (90) to 11.7 (73) in front of nearly 19,000 fans.
As has become customary in these end of season fixtures, the biggest cheers were reserved for a long melee involving most players midway through the third quarter.
There were occasional spotfires throughout the second half, with Eagles star Chad Fletcher - one of few star players to take the field - getting particularly agitated in one stoush.
Umpires laid no reports and the match was not televised but it was understood there was rudimentary video tape available for review.
Jeff Farmer starred for Freo, kicking four goals in a burst which turned the match in the Dockers' favour, and even celebrated one by jumping the fence to join the crowd.
Daniel Haines was awarded the official best afield honours as encouragement for a performance that may kickstart his career after being dogged by injury.
Former Dockers skipper Shaun McManus showed some of his old dash with a couple of important second-quarter goals that hauled back the Eagles' early lead.
West Coast had the first four scoring shots before Freo got going, and at quarter-time the Eagles led by six points, with goalsneak Damien Adkins kicking two majors.
