Hasleby set for AFL pre-season cup

Fremantle assistant coach Chris Scott predicts Paul Hasleby will be back in full training before Christmas and reckons the AFL midfielder is a chance to line up for the opening NAB Cup match against Richmond on February 15.

Hasleby underwent a knee reconstruction earlier this year after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in the Dockers' pre-season win over West Coast.

The 27-year-old was put through his paces at pre-season training on Monday and blowing heavily after a series of gruelling runs.

He later joined the rest of the group and Scott believed the 166-game veteran was just weeks away from resuming full training.

"He's probably had the easing-in already," Scott said.

"He's got a pretty good base of fitness, we've just got to be careful with him in the really intense, match-like drills.

"Flat out change of direction and contact stuff is limited but besides that everything else is OK.

"We're hopeful that before Christmas he'll be doing all that stuff.

"He's not as fit as we'd like him to be and he's not quite ready to do all the work, but we are confident that when the season starts that he'll be in a better place than he was at the start of the '08 season.

"I would expect, and this is off the top of my head without consulting the medical staff, I would expect he'd be ready (for the opening NAB Cup fixture).

"We were disappointed to lose him last year, he was a big part of our plans."

Meanwhile, Fremantle will use the next few weeks to decide whether to select former Brisbane half-forward Matthew Moody in the upcoming national or pre-season draft.

The 23-year-old notched 34 games in four seasons with the Lions before being axed at the end of last season.

Moody trained with the Dockers on Monday and Scott indicated the South Fremantle product would be strongly considered by the club's coaching staff.

"He's the type of player . . . that you'd expect to kick a lot of goals," Scott said.
