Ex-league star joins Force coach ranks
The Western Force have appointed former rugby league star Phil Blake as the club's defence/skills coach for the upcoming Super 15 season.
Blake, who was also recently drafted into the Wallabies' coaching set-up to assist Australia's tour of Hong Kong and Europe, will link up with the Force in early December.
The former halfback was one of league's most attacking players during his 16-year playing career and briefly coached South Sydney in 2003.
He switched codes five years ago and has since transformed Sydney rugby union club Manly into the best defensive team of the NSW competition.
"I know the challenges ahead won't be easy, it's a tough competition," Blake said.
"But I think (Force head coach) Richard (Graham) has recruited quality playing personnel and there aren't any reasons why we can't have successful seasons moving forward, starting from next year.
"I always knew that it was going to take some time to get to opportunities like this and after five years spent in rugby coaching I think the timing is right to take it to the next level."
Graham said Blake's credentials made him perfect for the role at the Force.
"It was apparent in talking with Phil that he is very passionate about the defensive aspect of the game and driven to see his teams do well," Graham said.
"He is a quality guy, uncomplicated in his approach to the game and having been involved in professional sport for over 20 years will bring a no-nonsense approach."
The Force, who start pre-season training on November 1, are expected to appoint a new forwards coach soon.
