Ellis named Wests Tigers' best
England international Gareth Ellis has been named Wests Tigers NRL player of the year for the second consecutive season.
The uncompromising second rower was a revelation in 2009 after joining from the English Super League, but went to another level this year, combining his defensive prowess with attacking ability.
Ellis, who will now prepare for England's tilt at the Four Nations tournament, played 24 matches this season and mid-year extended his contract with the club until the end of 2013.
Stars Robbie Farah and Benji Marshall were other players to receive awards at a sold out Wests Tigers grand final luncheon at Le Montage Function Centre in Leichhardt.
Farah was recognised as the Noel Kelly forward of the year and Marshall the Keith Barnes back of the year, while both were presented with Iron Man awards along with Lote Tuqiri and Chris Heighington for playing all matches this season.
The rookie of the year award went to young second rower Simon Dwyer, who put that now famous hit on Roosters' forward Jared Waerea-Hargreaves in the first qualifying final.
Heighington was named the Wests Tigers members player of the year and Marshall was congratulated with the club's community award.
