Crows captain Goodwin won't play again
Adelaide captain Simon Goodwin says injury has beaten him and he won't play another AFL game.
The 33-year-old Crows skipper on Monday conceded his decorated career had been ended by an ankle injury.
The five-time All Australian announced in May he would retire at season's end, but has missed the past four games with injury.
Goodwin on Monday tried to jog but lasted just 30 seconds, clarifying a return to action was impossible with just two games remaining of Adelaide's season.
"I would have loved to have been fit enough to play another game this season," Goodwin told Adelaide's website.
"That has been my aim for the past few weeks but it slowly became clear that my ankle injury was not going to allow me to do anywhere near the training required to play.
"When I announced my retirement earlier this season I said that I would treat every game as my last.
"Im glad I played with that attitude because when we beat Geelong in round 16 I had absolutely no idea that it would be my final game.
"This has not been the perfect finish to my career but I know that I gave my all until the end on the field, and have also kept pushing to get back even though I understood the chances of playing were slim at best."
Goodwin's career ends on 275 games and hastens Adelaide's search for a new captain, with onballer Nathan van Berlo favoured to win the role ahead of fullback Ben Rutten.
Goodwin was a member of Adelaide's two premiership sides in 1997 and 1998, won three club champion awards and was captain since 2008.
