Goodwin joins Bombers coaching staff
Essendon have secured another piece of their coaching puzzle, with former Adelaide midfielder Simon Goodwin joining the AFL club as an assistant.
Just two days after James Hird was appointed coach of the Bombers and one day after Sean Wellman was also lured back to the club, Goodwin has also come on board.
But whether Geelong coach Mark Thompson will join Goodwin, Wellman and Hird at the Bombers is still unknown, with the former Essendon premiership player still weighing up his future.
"He (Goodwin) is someone that we have had our eye on for a long time," Essendon football operations manager Paul Hamilton said.
"He is a person who is widely regarded in the industry as having all the skills to become an excellent coach.
"Despite being sought after by a number of clubs, Simon wanted to come to Essendon because he felt that he could have a big influence on the young group of players here at Essendon.
"The opportunity to work with James Hird was obviously another strong influence in his decision.
"It is a real coup for the club to be able to get Simon on board and his appointment is part of our plan to build the best possible coaching panel around James Hird."
Goodwin, a five-times All-Australian, played 275 games across 14 seasons with the Crows, including two premierships.
