Crows' Johncock says he's on last chance
Adelaide defender Graham Johncock knows he's on his last chance at the AFL club after a series of off-field indiscretions.
Johncock has arguably been Adelaide's best player in a lowly season on the field, but throughout his career he's been dogged by controversy away from the arena.
In May this year he was suspended for one game by Adelaide's leadership group for missing a rehabilitation session - an edict the dashing backman initially felt was unnecessary.
It was the latest in a list of punishments handed down by the Crows to the talented defender.
"I have had a few of those over my career," Johncock said on Wednesday of club-imposed suspensions.
"This year was something that I probably made a silly decision and the leadership group suspended me for one week ... I disagreed with it at the start."
Johncock was also suspended by the leadership group in July 2008 for what his coach Neil Craig described at the time as "losing focus" on football.
He missed two AFL games before winning a recall.
That suspension followed another incident in July 2005 when the Crows fined Johncock $1500 after he was involved in a car crash.
Johncock crashed his vehicle into two parked cars but fled the scene and later lied to police about his involvement, telling them his car had been stolen.
He faced criminal charges and, in December 2005, was fined $1000 and disqualified from driving for 21 days after pleading guilty to driving without due care, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and making a false report to police.
Despite his on-field brilliance, Johncock believed he was unlikely to be supported given any future incidents.
"There is only so much a club will take so I'm definitely on my last chance," he said.
"Not everybody gets opportunity at the elite level and I have been here a while now and had a few chances.
"I just want to make sure that when I walk away from the game that I don't have any regrets."
The 27-year-old said after this year's suspension, he was still winning back the trust of his teammates and club.
"Hopefully I can, over time, build that up again," Johncock said.
