Port coach counsels Motlop, Surjan
Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams has counselled key duo Daniel Motlop and Jacob Surjan to ensure no lingering ill-feeling from a spat involving their partners.
Motlop is being investigated by police following the incident at a Glenelg hotel several weeks ago.
Motlop and his partner were involved in an argument with Surjan's partner, who has complained to police.
Motlop and Surjan have both addressed Port players about the incident, and coach Williams said he had also talked to the pair.
"I have actually (talked to them), together and separately, and there is no problems between them," Williams said on Friday.
Asked if the matter had been blown out of proportion or was unfortunate, Williams replied: "A bit of both.
"I have always thought when alcohol is involved that anything can happen.
"I really don't want to keep answering all the questions because what you do is write a big story about it when there is none, so that is all I want to say."
Williams also defended Motlop following a week of criticism about the mercurial forward's on-field persona, including his overt goal celebrations and general body language.
"You get a little bit of the extrovert in him but certainly you wouldn't want to take out the great stuff that he does," Williams said.
"Everyone has a different personality.
"You blokes (media) promote them, the club promotes him kicking goals from behind the boundary line, and then you want to smash him when he does something that you think is a little out of line.
"He realises that at times he can go over the top but in his nature, he's a person that loves to play the game.
"And I just put up with some of the rest and I think our supporters and the public should because you can't have it both ways."
Motlop and Surjan will both play against Melbourne in Darwin on Saturday night.
