3-D TV coming to Australia - for a while
Three-dimensional TV has moved a step closer, with the Nine Network and SBS announcing trials of the technology.
Nine and SBS will broadcast 3-D programs between May 19 and July 19, including live telecasts of three State of Origin rugby league matches, starting on May 26.
SBS director of technology and distribution Paul Broderick said last month that the broadcaster was considering airing a World Cup soccer match using the technology but it would be costly to do so.
Soccer's governing body FIFA has already announced 25 matches will be filmed in 3-D, including Australia's game against Germany on June 13.
The aim of the technology is to broadcast realistic high-definition programs that appear to show depth, but only viewers with 3-D digital TV receivers will be able to see it.
These start at about $2500.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) issued the licences and 3-D TV will be broadcast in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Newcastle and Wollongong.
ACMA chairman Chris Chapman on Friday said shops would use the trials to showcase the first generation of 3-D receivers.
"It is important people are aware that these trials have only been approved for this two-month period," he said in a statement.
