Klim powers back into reckoning
Olympic gold medallist Michael Klim's frustration was replaced by elation as he took another important step out of the swimming wilderness.
Klim won his second gold medal at the Victorian championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, going under 50 seconds in the 100m freestyle to add it to the 50m title he won on Sunday night.
After shoulder and back problems forced him out of the sport in 2002 and most of 2003, the 26-year-old's fitness is finally starting to match his desire to compete for another five years.
This is only Klim's second meet after recovering from his latest shoulder surgery.
But his slick 49.86sec swim, his second sub-50 at this meet, suggests he's well on track for the Olympic selection trials in Sydney in March.
"It feels great. Just to be able to back up day after day with the shoulder, I come away from this meet with a lot of positives," Klim said.
"But there's still a lot more work to do if I want to make the Olympic team."
Klim's final hurdle will be competing in his pet butterfly events - something he has not done so far because he doesn't believe his shoulder can yet cope with the rigours of the stroke in competition.
He will use a low-key AIS meet in Canberra in late February to test himself competitively at the stroke in which he is a former 100m world record holder.
"It will be up and running before trials, definitely," Klim said.
