Young Broncos are dangerous, warns Boyd
Former Brisbane star Darius Boyd has warned his St George Illawarra teammates to be on guard against a host of unfamiliar Broncos faces even he is struggling to recognise.
Fullback Boyd will play his 100th NRL game at WIN Stadium on Friday night against the club he spent three years at before linking with the Dragons in 2009.
But don't expect him to be compiling a dossier on the likes of Gerard Beale, Dale Copley and Mitch Rivett.
"I've seen a couple of them," he told reporters on Thursday.
"They're all good, young, exciting players and they'll be definitely out there to show us up tomorrow night."
The extent of the injury-ravaged Broncos' inexperience is most obvious in the backs.
While the Dragons' backline averages 101 games each, Brisbane's have an average of just eight games under their belts, a figure inflated by centre Alex Glenn's relatively huge 26.
The Dragons are massive favourites to inflict a fourth straight loss on the last-placed Broncos, but Boyd has warned against complacency.
"A lot of teams get like that when you probably don't think you have to put in the hard yards each week and it's not like that, you have to play hard every week to try and get the two points," he said.
"They're probably going to do things that you wouldn't expect normal NRL teams to do so I'm sure they'll be ready to go."
His point is borne out by Brisbane's surprising attack stats so far in 2010.
They may be in 16th spot with just a solitary win but they've scored just two tries less than the second-placed Dragons and made nearly twice the number of line-breaks.
Wayne Bennett's side surrendered their unbeaten record to Melbourne last Friday, scoring just four points in the process.
"We know that we didn't play very well at all and we only lost by 13 points," Boyd said.
"They're definitely the best team in the comp so if we didn't play well and we only lost by that much I think we can give the competition a good shake."
The Broncos' problem has been leaking nearly 30 points a game and Boyd said he was feeling for his former club, which has the likes of Test stars Justin Hodges and Israel Folau among a host of players on the injured list and Antonio Winterstein and Ben Te'o suspended for disciplinary reasons.
"It's good not to play (Hodges and Folau) tomorrow night but at the same time it's sad for the club and Queensland and for rugby league as well," Boyd said.
"They're great players and they deserve to do the best they can.
"There's still a few mates there and it's always good to play against mates, it brings the best out of you."
Brisbane can take some solace from their 4-4 record in Wollongong, while Bennett has only managed a 1-2 record against his former club.
Meanwhile, Queensland winger Boyd has welcomed Darren Lockyer's decision to play one last State of Origin series.
