Darius makes a dream debut for Maroons
First it was Adam who? On Wednesday night it was Darius why?
Brisbane Darius Boyd's selection on the wing for Queensland in a must win State of Origin raised more than a few eyebrows with many questioning whether the 20 year-old was made of the right stuff.
In 2006 the selection of Adam Mogg for game two with the series on the line was greeted by "Adam Who?"
The Canberra winger had every Queensland chanting his name after he scored two tries on debut in Queensland's 30-6 win before scoring again in the decider which Queensland won 16-14.
On Wednesday night, Boyd left his critics eating humble pie and he did it after seven minutes when he scored the first of his two tries.
Boyd said he couldn't wait to ring his grandmother Delphine Boyd who couldn't make it to the game to share in her grandson's big night.
"She watched it on telly. I think she'll be pretty happy and I'll ring her after this (media conference)," he said.
With the words of injured captain Darren Lockyer still ringing in his ears, Boyd shook off a bout of pre-game nerves in front of 52,416 mostly Maroon fans to savour the night the best way possible.
"It was pretty fast at the start and I was pretty nervous," said Boyd, still to decide if he will re-sign with the Brisbane Broncos.
Boyd said he was smiling all the way to the try line after centre and man-of-the-match Greg Inglis put him into the clear.
"I was smiling the whole time, I was feeling over the moon and I couldn't wait to celebrate with all the boys once I scored," he said.
Boyd was denied a hat-trick when he had a try disallowed in the second half after he couldn't ground the ball cleanly in the left corner.
