Jetta prepares to meet Swans role model
Lewis Jetta still can't wait to meet Adam Goodes in person even if the dual Brownlow Medallist spoiled his AFL draft experience a little.
The livewire West Australian had a chat on the phone with the Sydney co-captain just prior to last week's draft in which the Swans selected Jetta at No.14.
"He told me good luck and said something about pick 14," Jetta said at his first day of training at his new club.
"I did not believe him until when I had my name called out and I was thinking in my head, `You just spoiled the moment Goodesy'.
"I wanted to be surprised ... but it is alright, I am here now."
Goodes missed training on Monday for personal reasons and Jetta is expected to meet his hero in the flesh for the first time at training on Tuesday.
"It helps out a lot to have Goodesy being here," said Jetta.
"He is a mentor and he is a role model to all Aboriginal kids."
The lightning-fast Jetta is listed at 69 kilograms but on appearances that number seems a bit kind for the wafer-thin 20-year-old.
But don't question his ability to mix it on the field.
Jetta said he had learnt to use his pace and agility to leave his bigger opponents clutching at his shadow in an impressive 2009 season in the WAFL.
"I adjusted to the big bodies pretty quickly," he said.
"I learnt to dodge them and try and get away from them, try not to get killed by them."
He said watching his second cousin Leroy (Essendon) and first cousin Neville (Melbourne) play in the AFL had fuelled his belief that he was capable of playing at the top level.
"I am actually better than Neville, we used to compete everywhere we went and I would always win but in the end and he beat me to be drafted first (last year)," he said with a smile.
