Force heading overseas for pre-season
Western Force have added an extra game to their pre-season schedule in an attempt to erase an annoying Super 14 hoodoo.
Since their inception in 2006, the Force have yet to win a season opener, losing all four encounters.
Skipper Nathan Sharpe hopes that will change after the WA franchise locked in three trial games instead of the regular two.
The Force will kick off their pre-season in South Africa against the Stormers (January 23) and Sharks (January 26), before returning to Perth to tackle Queensland Reds on February 5.
"Over the last few years we've only managed to get two trial games and consequently we've lost every first game of the Super 14s, so we are looking to turn that around this year and get off to a good start," Sharpe said.
"We've got quite a few new guys coming in so it (the trip to South Africa) is a good opportunity for everyone to get to know each other both on and off the field."
The Force kick off the season at home to the Brumbies on February 12 and coach John Mitchell hoped the tough pre-season schedule would have his charges in prime condition.
"We want three hard trials this campaign to give our new team the necessary match conditions to achieve team cohesion," Mitchell said.
"Several new players have not been to South Africa before, so we need to give them exposure to both top quality opposition and the demands of travel.
"All three teams bring a different style and different strengths; therefore it allows us to test and review our game in a number of areas."
Sharpe, who must spend at least another week in a sling after undergoing shoulder surgery, was confident he would be fit to take part in some of the trial games.
Meanwhile, the Force unveiled their new away jersey on Monday, with a blue and white strip replacing the all-yellow used in previous campaigns.
The blue and black home jersey has small changes to the shape and cut.
