Force maul Sharks 26-0 in Cape Town
A Wallabies-laden Western Force ended their pre-season rugby tour of South Africa on a high with a 26-0 triumph over the Sharks at Newlands Stadium.
First-half tries to Sam Wykes, Ryan Cross and Cameron Shepherd helped set up the win, with young gun James O'Connor crossing in the final minute to cap off a fine performance.
The four-tries-to-nil mauling made up for the Force's 54-12 loss to the Stormers just days earlier, although that squad was littered with debutants and other inexperienced players.
Wallabies O'Connor, Cross, Shepherd, Richard Brown, David Pocock, Matt Dunning and Nathan Sharpe all started against the Sharks, while former Springboks flyhalf Andre Pretorius made his debut in Force colours and former Waratah Brett Sheehan also started.
Sharpe, who made a 20-minute cameo against the Stormers, played a full 80 minutes against the Sharks and said his reconstructed shoulder held up well.
"It was good to be back in the saddle," Sharpe said.
"I've had a few months out after shoulder surgery so I'm really enjoying my football.
"Our organisation was much better tonight and if you're well organised then that allows you to become more physical in the tackle.
"We created a lot of turnovers and played with some good width at times.
"It certainly is very encouraging for us.
"I think that first half against the Stormers was a real eye-opener for us and we took a lot out of that.
"They brought a lot of intensity into that game and we learnt and replicated that in own performance tonight.
"It was a quality Sharks outfit across the board.
"They're a strong team and we got a quality hit-out.
"That's exactly what we wanted to achieve in this trip to South Africa."
The Force will tackle Queensland Reds in Perth on February 5 in their final pre-season hit-out before the round one blockbuster against the Brumbies on February 12.
Force coach John Mitchell said the trip to South Africa had been an invaluable learning experience for his new-look squad.
And importantly, no injuries came out of the two matches.
"This has been the toughest pre-season trial period we've had," Mitchell said.
"The learning from the Stormers performance is huge for a lot our younger guys.
"For them to experience this kind of environment has been invaluable.
"Life is about experience and experiences and you've got to learn quickly.
"You also have to learn quickly in rugby so this opportunity has been very beneficial for everyone at the club."
