Sydney Uni make it five titles in a row
A number of Wallabies collected injuries as Sydney University clinched their fifth successive Sydney Rugby Premiership with a gritty 24-19 Grand Final win over Randwick at Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday.
Three capped forwards, University flanker Phil Waugh (quadriceps) and the Randwick duo of prop Sekope Kepu (ankle) and hooker/flanker Adam Freier (hamstring) were all in the wars on the eve of the announcement of a Wallabies training squad.
The torrid encounter, which showcased nine Test representatives featured plenty of bruising contest at the breakdown.
University scored three tries to two and led for most of the match apart from a couple of minutes early in the second half.
Waugh produced a typically busy performance at the breakdown before leaving the field with just over ten minutes remaining.
The 79-Test veteran, who played in just two early-season internationals and wasn't required in the Tri-Nations campaign, doubted his knock would prevent him from being available for Wallabies duty.
"I will go away, ice it up, give it a week's rest and I will be back into it next week," Waugh told reporters.
Kepu and Freier weren't quite as optimistic about their respective injuries.
Freier, who has missed most of the Super 14 tournament with a bicep injury and was also sidelined by calf and hamstring problems this year, said he was devastated by his latest setback.
Lining up against Waugh in the unfamiliar position of openside flanker, the 25-Test forward was forced off the field after just 24 minutes.
He said he thought he suffered a strain in a scrum, but might have torn his hamstring while attempting a tackle.
"It's devastating. I've worked so hard to get back, if there's a rock bottom for me, that would been it," Freier said.
"To get this is a huge blow to me and all the work I've put in over the last four months.
"I'm not going to give up by any means, there's no way I've even reached my potential," added Freier who hasn't played a Test since 2008.
Kepu, who missed the start of this season after being injured on the 2008 Wallabies tour where he made his first two Test appearances, wasn't sure about the extent of his injuries.
"My ankle got caught in a tackle, I will just have to see tomorrow in a medical how I go," Kepu said.
University dominated the first half of the game, but led just 14-11 at the break following a try just before halftime to Randwick's Wallaby winger Drew Mitchell.
Randwick led 16-14 following an early second half try to prolific point scoring fullback Marshall Milroy, who finished the year with 282 points.
However, a spectacular solo try to centre Mitch Inman restored University's lead and they never relinquished it despite absorbing enormous pressure in the final quarter.
