Broncos to meet Titans in NRL finals
Broncos captain Darren Lockyer wants his players to quickly forget about their five-game charge to an 18th NRL finals series and quickly re-focus for a titanic battle with the Gold Coast at Skilled Park on Saturday.
Brisbane set up the mouth-watering derby final with a 22-10 reversal against Canberra who triggered the Broncos' resurrection five weeks ago by humiliating the six-time premiers 56-0.
Lockyer said after Brisbane's 68-point turnaround in front of 35,112 fans that the Broncos' best winning streak since 2007 was history once the finals kicked off.
"We've won five in a row but we have to put that behind us and not talk about it," said Lockyer shortly after his team song had boomed from the dressing room and into Raiders' coach David Furner's post-match press conference.
"There are things we can do better and we need to focus on that."
Brisbane pushed too many passes in the first half but led 8-6 at he break and turned that into a 22-10 win, built on more stern defence.
The Broncos haven't lost a game since Canberra belted them 56-0 on a cold and miserable night in the capital which Lockyer said forced him and his players to address some serious defensive deficiencies.
"The feeling is totally opposite (tonight)," said Lockyer who is looking for his fifth premiership with the club where he debuted as a teenager.
"We lost 56-0 and decided right there we needed to turn around our defence."
They certainly did that.
After leaking over 300 points in losing seven of their eight games up to the Canberra loss, Brisbane's defence, especially off their try line, has been outstanding.
In their past four games they have kept Penrith, minor premiers St George Illawarra and the Cowboys scoreless in the second half.
"We defended them (Canberra) well tonight and they are a good attacking side," said coach Ivan Henjak.
"Our attack could have been more patient but we can fix that up.
"They're quite a big pack and it was a pretty good hit out for our forwards."
Brisbane prop Nick Kenny led the way, making 165 metres from 10 charges.
Corey Parker was again outstanding, grabbing two tries, while Sam Thaiday ripped into both his defensive work and his attack when he got wide.
Dave Taylor was again entertaining getting out wide on the wing and showing his speed and skill with a deft kick and chase which almost resulted in a try.
Raiders fullback Josh Dugan won over the big crowd with two courageous saves on Taylor, the last one seconds before fulltime when he forced his 115kg frame into touch.
Taylor got out wide at every opportunity but Henjak was not critical.
"I thought he got the mix right tonight," said Henjak.
"He showed us everything with that chip kick."
Raiders coach David Furner said he was excited about 2010 after what he'd seen from some of his young players this season.
"These guys had nothing to play for tonight, but they played for each other and that impresses me," he said.
"Am I excited and confident about next year .. bloody oath I am."
