Broncos focus on winning send off
Inspirational Broncos captain Darren Lockyer says Brisbane wants to send their departing stars out on a winning note after finally overcoming months of contract wrangling.
Lockyer has admitted the speculation surrounding the future of their off contract stars had been a distraction for the NRL defending premiers.
Forwards Dane Carlaw (Catalans Dragons) and Petero Civoniceva (Penrith), winger Brent Tate (New Zealand Warriors) and utility Shaun Berrigan (Hull) are among the big names who will depart the Broncos at the end of the year.
Lockyer said the Broncos had finally regrouped after a tumultuous period of contract talks and were focussed solely on back to back titles.
"They (departing players) want to make the most of their time here at the Broncos and we want to do the right thing by them as well," he told Seven Network tonight.
"We want to go out there as a team, as a group of men and accomplish as much as we can."
Lockyer summed up their new-found focus when he sealed Brisbane's 19-18 home win over the Gold Coast Titans last Friday night with a golden point field goal.
After overcoming a horror 1-4 season start, Brisbane is in the top eight at 8-8 thanks to four consecutive wins.
They will aim for five straight against the North Queensland Cowboys at Townsville on Friday night.
Lockyer said the tough times had only added a new dimension to his captaincy.
"I think it has helped me develop as a person as well as a leader, (but) I feel I've still got plenty to learn," he said.
