Castleford in the Chase thanks to Kiwi

Castleford Tigers' coach Terry Matterson warned his Super League rivals on Sunday that his in-form scrum-half Rangi Chase can still improve after he masterminded their win at the Bradford Bulls.

The 23-year-old former St George utility back, again deputising for the injured Brent Sherwin, grabbed two of the Tigers seven tries in a stunning personal performance.

Chase, who is in his first campaign at the Jungle after leaving the Dragons at the end of 2008, has been one of the signings of the season with several eye-catching displays.

But the former Brisbane Broncos star Matterson believes there is more to come from Chase.

"Rangi is producing the goods for us week-in, week-out at the moment but we know he can get better," said Matterson.

"We've worked really hard on him since he joined us and he's certainly growing in stature.

"He's stepped up since we lost Brent (Sherwin) to injury and wherever we've asked him to play he has performed.

"And the great thing for us is that there is more to come from him - he can improve his decision-making at vital times and having Brent back in a couple of weeks will help him."

And Matterson has ordered his players to start producing the goods at home after their latest win on the road.

It was the Tigers' sixth away from home this season but they have won just twice at the Jungle and Matterson admits that record must improve if Castleford are to make the top eight and the end-of-season play-offs.

"It's another big win for us but we know we've got to start getting some points at home," added Matterson, whose side are ninth.

"Our home crowd want to see us winning games as well and it's something that we are working hard on to put right.

"If we can do that as soon as possible and maintain our away form it should be a good end to the season."

Salford coach Shaun McRae has refused to give up on a late push for the play-offs after their shock 20-10 win over leaders St Helens.

Two tries from rookie stand-off Stefan Ratchford did the damage for the hosts while former Great Britain star Sean Long added to Saints' woes after breaking his jaw.

Salford are six points adrift of the top eight but ex-South Sydney boss McRae, who lead Saints to a league-and-cup double in 1996, has called on his side to make their Willows home a fortress in the run-in.

"It was a fantastic victory for the players and they deserved it for the effort they put in," said McRae.

"We had a gameplan and it worked and now we've got to repeat these performances against the other teams.

"I can't explain why the best sides bring out the best in us but anything is possible before the end of the season.

"We probably need to win another six games but we've got a lot of home games to play and we've got to take advantage of that."
