No finals a failure for Souths: Coleman
Former South Sydney skipper Craig Coleman has refused to blame under-siege coach Jason Taylor for the Rabbitohs' slide down the NRL, despite admitting the season will be a failure if they fail to make the finals.
Coleman had the Bunnies pencilled in for a top four finish at the start of the season, but the top eight is starting to look like a tough enough prospect following four straight losses.
They currently sit three points outside the eight with only five wins from 14 matches, while rumours of a player revolt surfaced on Tuesday in relation to the club's stringent rules regarding off-field activities - particularly alcohol consumption.
Asked if a second straight season without finals football would be a failure, Coleman said: "For sure - I'm sure that everyone from Russell (co-owner Russell Crowe) down to the ballboys would be disappointed because they were expected to make the top eight.
"At the start of the season I was thinking they'd be in the top four.
"I don't know (what the problem is) ... there's six internationals in there, they can't use the excuse they haven't got the players any more."
The losing run has increased the pressure on Taylor, though it is believed he has strong support from club management.
Coleman, who also coached the Bunnies from 1998 to 2002, refused to lay the blame with Taylor.
But he admits time is fast running out for a turnaround, the Rabbitohs needing to win at least seven of their last ten matches to guarantee a finals berth, starting with Saturday night's clash with Wests Tigers at ANZ stadium.
"I don't want to blame the coach, I've been in that position before," Coleman said.
"They're all in it together - the coaching staff and the players and they have to get out of it.
"They have to win this weekend or they'll be fighting it out for the wooden spoon and I thought we'd be top four contenders at the start of the year. But you're only a couple of wins away from being good again."
Taylor denied rumours of a revolt at the Rabbitohs.
"I don't ready anything into anything that I hear from outside sources," Taylor told reporters.
"We're a tight-knit club."
