El Masri approaches another 'Dogs record
Prolific point-scorer Hazem El Masri will become the first Bulldog to rack up 300 NRL games on Friday night - a milestone he claims is proof that loyalty still exists in the professional era.
El Masri will be the 13th player to reach the landmark but just the sixth to do so for the one club when the Bulldogs take on St George Illawarra in a top of the table derby at WIN Jubilee Oval.
"It just shows that there is still some loyalty in the game obviously from both sides," El Masri said.
"From the Bulldogs club - they've been really good to me over the last decade and on my behalf too - loyalty goes both ways."
The 300-game mark is the latest in a long list of accolades to befall the softly spoken flyer.
Earlier this year he eclipsed Andrew Johns' NRL points record with his current tally at 2256 points, while he also sits most of the Bulldogs' other statistical categories including most tries (145), most points in a match (34) and most goals in a match (11).
But as has been the case throughout his 14-year career, El Masri deflected the attention away from his personal accomplishments with his focus firmly on keeping the Bulldogs at the top of the ladder.
"It's going to be huge - regardless of the 300 games," he said.
"Just both clubs and the rivalry between them, it always brings out (the best) especially when they're going good.
"There's not a better time for both clubs to play each other."
While he has avoided a match-up with Wendell Sailor, El Masri will have his hands full going up against Brett Morris, who scored four tries in a losing effort against North Queensland on Saturday night.
Regardless of his opponent, El Masri said it was good just to be playing in a winning team again following a disastrous 2008 when the club collected the wooden spoon.
"This club is renowned for bouncing back," El Masri said.
"The quality of players that we brought with a lot of leadership behind them, it was always going to be the case ... we've really been competitive."
