Dogs could make El Masri wait for record
Bulldogs superboot Hazem El Masri is becoming increasingly anxious that his side's poor form could cost him the chance to become league's greatest pointscorer this year.
El Masri is just 66 points away from equalling Andrew Johns's record of 2176 career points but the Bulldogs' streak of four successive losses is thwarting the sharpshooter's chances at claiming the milestone in 2008.
If El Masri fails to add to his four tries already scored in 2008 it will take him 33 goals over the final 10 NRL games to pull level with retired great Johns.
Given El Masri is striking them at 80.6 per cent this year the Bulldogs will need to cross for at least four tries per game for the remainder of the year to give him enough opportunities to overtake Johns.
"I'm hoping to get it this year, I hadn't really been thinking about it too much," said El Masri.
"The thing is when the team is playing well and everyone's still enjoying their footy, you tend to score a lot more points and you go on about it without thinking about it and all of a sudden it's there.
"That's how I've treated every record and that's how I'm treating this one.
"A lot of people ask me about it but I don't even know how far, I know it's like 70 or 60 points or whatever points away.
"The main thing is not to think about it and let it happen naturally."
El Masri said he would love to claim the record in league's Centenary season, but he also wanted it this year so he wasn't reminded about it the entire off-season.
"It's a significant year and I just want to do it this year and get it over and done with because I don't need everyone to remind me again next year," he said.
"Hopefully I can get a lot more opportunities and convert a lot more goals. Hopefully they can score them near the posts as well because they've been doing my head in with the ones out wide."
The Bulldogs get their chance to move back into the winners' circle on Monday night when they host South Sydney at ANZ Stadium.
The Rabbitohs are flying at present with three successive wins to rise from last to 14th, above the 15th-placed Dogs, and will chase their fourth win in a row for the first time in 14 years.
With 10 games to go the Rabbitohs find themselves three wins outside the top eight and a remote chance at sneaking home for the finals.
Rabbitohs skipper Roy Asotasi however says the possibility of a fairytale run home has not entered discussions at Redfern.
"We haven't been focusing on making the top eight or anything like that since the season started," he said.
"We had a bad patch and now that we've strung a couple of wins together we're just focusing on getting the two points every week.
"We can't underestimate the Dogs on Monday night, they're going through a bad patch, we just have to make sure we go focused into every game."
