I want to be a winger, says Hayne

Jarryd Hayne will be happy if his giddy tour of rugby league backline positions has stopped at winger.

The versatile Parramatta star has been chosen on the wing for NSW City against Country this week, his fourth different position this season.

A refreshingly candid Hayne admits his high profile switch to five eighth for the Eels at the start of the competition flopped.

He was then moved to the centres by Parramatta coach Daniel Anderson before playing a blinder at fullback last week.

While Hayne said he could now he might now be considered a utility back along the lines of Newcastle's Kurt Gidley, he wanted to nail down a specific position.

He was widely tipped to get a start at fullback for City after his star turn there last week, but was happy to return to his old haunt on the wing.

It was out wide that Hayne blazed into the NSW Origin side and where he also made his sole Test appearance.

"That's (wing) where I'm best suited and that's where I play my best football, so that's where I want to play," Hayne said.

Of the experiment at five-eighth, he said: "I didn't really nail it down and wasn't too good at doing it.

"I tried it and I failed.

"With the centres, I was starting to get better week by week and to play fullback was just an added bonus."

Hayne was adamant his time spent at five-eighth hadn't been wasted as his increased involvement in that area had improved his fitness.

The 21-year-old back added to his representative portfolio last year when he played fullback for Fiji at the World Cup.

His opposition for wing spot in the NSW Origin team includes the Country duo of James McManus and Joel Monaghan and his City team-mate David Williams.

"It's the greatest achievement in rugby league to play Origin, so I'm always hopeful of that," said Hayne, who has notched five appearances for NSW over the last two seasons."
