Teen prop McGuire to face Roosters
Teenaged prop Josh McGuire has won a late call-up to Brisbane's bench for Friday night's NRL showdown with the Sydney Roosters in Sydney.
McGuire, who made his debut a fortnight ago against the Warriors, beat Ashton Sims into coach Ivan Henjak's 17-man squad after the back-rower Ben Teo (ankle) was ruled out, with Lagi Setu (sternum) passed fit to come into the starting pack in his place.
Henjak is expecting the Good Friday clash to be extremely physical, with the Roosters boasting a powerhouse pack led by representative forwards Willie Mason, Mark O'Meley, Nate Myles and the veteran Craig Fitzgibbon.
McGuire, nicknamed 'The Big Show', scored four tries in his first two games in the Queensland Cup before making his first-grade debut in Auckland and impressing with his toughness.
The 19-year-old front-rower is not tall but has good hands and a nice sidestep for a big man, which make him dangerous close to the try line.
He and his fellow young prop Dave Taylor, being talked about for State of Origin selection if he keeps playing more minutes, give Henjak good back-up for the starting props Nick Kenny and Joel Clinton.
"Josh has been going well in the Queensland Cup and he did quite well in New Zealand as well," said Henjak, after a short, sharp final training session at Red Hill on Thursday morning.
"We think he can give us some good impact off the bench.
"He only turned 19 recently and it's a big thing for a young fellow like that to be playing in an NRL forward pack.
"He's got quite a bit of ability and there's some good potential there, he's certainly a player of the future for us."
McGuire has a lot of confidence for a young player in such a tough position which Henjak said was not a bad thing.
"He certainly doesn't lack any confidence," he said.
"But he mixes that with a really good attitude and a really good work ethic.
"I don't mind them having a bit of confidence as long as they have the other things you need to go with it."
